Plant juggling: one is done!

by David Zatz on

FCA’s ambitious plan to re-align manufacturing with customer demand has seen its first conversion.

Belvidere has been refit, and is already making Jeep Cherokees, according to an official FCA representative. The plant had built the old Compass and Patriot, and the Dodge Dart; it was likely the easiest step, since the Dart and Cherokee share key dimensions.

Belvidere's Millionth

Seven years ago, celebrating the one-millionth compact vehicle to be made at the plant (July 28th, 2010). Today, the plant is making Jeep Cherokees.

FCA had no comment on future plant schedules, but “redriderbob” wrote that Toledo North will start making Wranglers in November 2017. Toledo South will finish making JK Wranglers after this, and will close and retool to make Jeep JT pickups and JL Wranglers. The launch date for the Jeep pickup is expected to be around October 2018.

Sterling Heights is still being rebuilt, and isn’t set to launch the 2019 Ram 1500 (“DT”) until summer 2018. Warren Truck will do a brief run of 2019 Rams, then shut down for an update; it should build the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, along with next-generation Ram Heavy Duty and Chassis Cabs, in 2019 or 2020.

At Windsor, the Dodge Caravan may finally be killed off in 2019 — after a mild re-engineering to meet new safety rules — and a new Pacifica-based crossover and Portal-like production vehicle will appear around 2020-22. Windsor is set for further upgrades.

Finally, as we noted earlier, Brampton will be getting upgraded paint facilities and other upgrades over multiple years to help launch its 2021 full size cars (possibly including a crossover).
