Sales dropping in US

by David Zatz on

FCA’s United States sales fell by 7%, to 187,348 (comparisons are to June 2016); GM and Ford each dropped by around 5% and Asian automakers climbed slightly.

Retail sales for the month dropped 5%, to 139,947; fleet sales were down by 15%, to 47,401, as part of a planned drop. Jeep took the biggest fleet-sales hit, cutting its volume in half.

Ram had an exceptionally good month, with the Ram pickup and both ProMaster vans having June records. The Grand Cherokee shot up by 21%, hitting its best June since 2005, and Pacifica had its best month so far, easily outselling both Chrysler-brand minivans from June 2016 — still not matching the Caravan’s impressive 16,210 sales.  Some of those seem to have come at the expense of the Journey, which had a nasty fall.

Fiat continued its free-fall, other than the 124, which did fairly well (510 sales).  Alfa Romeo sold 992 Giulias, making up for the drop in Fiat sales, and its first two Stelvios.

The 300 had a surprisingly good month, gaining 47%, and coming close to the Charger and Challenger. The Challenger also sold well, rising by 24% to be the most popular of the large-car triplets, likely due to buzz around the hot Dodge Challenger Demon.

Over at Jeep, the Patriot’s sales dropped by around half, while the Compass stayed roughly stable — possibly because New Compass sales filled in for the Old Compass. The Cherokee continued its fall, and Renegade had its day in the sun as the fourth top seller.

GM sales dropped by 4.7%, with rental-fleets slashed by 54%. Ford slid by 5.1%.  Toyota gained by 2.1%, and Nissan rose by 2%. Honda posted a 0.8% gain, based largely on Acura SUV sales (Honda sales fell by 1% while Acura rose by 24%).
