Viper: fastest RWD on ’ring (video)

by David Zatz on

A crowdfunded effort to race a Dodge Viper at the Nürburgring track has borne fruit, albeit unofficially. Dominik Farnbacher has beaten his own record, set with a 2010 Dodge Viper.

This time, Farnbacher drove a 2017 Viper GTS-R ACR, improved over the prior generation with weight cuts, active aerodynamics, and better brakes, tires, and suspension. The car is “pure stock” with standard tires.

An unofficial run netted a time of 7:03.45, beating the current rear wheel drive car record of 7:10.92, set by a Mercedes AMG GT R. While no officials for record-keeping agencies were on hand, there were witnesses to vouch for the accuracy of the time.

The group planned to hit the track a second time, but mechanical issues followed by rain drowned the team’s hopes of another try.

Dodge set 13 records with the current Viper ACR, all in the US.  To move the effort to Germany, Russ Oasis raised $156,000 (378 people contributed through GoFundMe). Viper Exchange is running the show, using two cars.
