Older Liberty, Avenger, 200 recalled

A potentially degrading part in active head restraints has led Fiat Chrysler to recall 470,000 vehicles worldwide, 414,000 of them in the U.S.

FCA said Friday the module which moves headrests forward can degrade in “older model” vehicles including the 2012 Jeep Liberty, 2012-13 Dodge Avenger and the 200. The whiplash protection system can be deployed in rear-impact situations.

No injuries have been reported linked to the condition, which “may also illuminate an instrument-cluster warning light,” the company said in a release. The potential fault was uncovered after a company investigation sparked by in inquiry from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Affected customers will be notified next month, including 414,134 in the U.S., 24,893 in Canada, 9,488 in Mexico, and 21,473 outside the NAFTA region.

The largest number of affected vehicles are the Chrysler 200, which sold more than 120,000 units in the U.S. in both 2012 and 2013. The Avenger sold just over 90,000 units in the same year.
