SUVs recalled for brake shield check

by Chris Vander Doelen on

Following a similar recall in Canada last week, FCA is recalling 646,394 Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees built between 2011 and 2014 for brake water shield checks.

Fiat Chrysler has notified National Highway Traffic Safety Administraion that it will check brake booster shields on the SUVs to ensure they were installed properly. Only one accident – without injuries – has been noted as possibly linked to the shields.

The shields are intended to prevent water infiltration of the booster system, which could cause corrosion or reduce braking ability under wet conditions or when frozen after being wet. Some of the shields may have been subject to “incorrect installation … in the field,” NHTSA said. The shields were installed in connection with a previous recall in 2014.

Last week FCA Canada recalled 42,034 of the same Durangos and Grand Cherokees sold there for the same brake shield checks, plus another 21,139 units sold in Mexico. The U.S. recall checks begin in early November.
