Alfa finalist for NA Car of the Year

by Bill Cawthon on

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a finalist in the running for one of the North American Car of the Year awards — the first time Alfa Romeo has been among the final three, in the 24-year history of the NACOTY awards.

The Stelvio is competing with the Honda Odyssey and the Volvo XC60 for the 2017 SUV/Utility trophy in the Utility class.

The finalists were selected by secret ballots cast by nearly 60 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada.  The awards will be presented on January 15, 2018 at the North American International Auto Show, which has already begun setting up in Detroit.

Last year’s winner in the new SUV/Utility category was the Volvo XC90; in 2015 the truck winner was the Ford F-150; in  it was the Chevrolet Silverado. Full details of the award and past winners, nominees and points awarded for each can be found here. Detroit-based automakers have won the car of the year 15 times over the past 23 years, foreign automakers eight times.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
