How fast can a Hellcat go with a Christmas tree on the roof?

by Patrick Rall on

The team from Hennessey Performance strapped a Christmas Tree to the roof of a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat to see how fast the Mopar muscle car could go while hauling a 6-foot tree.

This time of year always manages to lead to some interesting automotive videos and this footage of a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat with a Christmas Tree strapped to the roof might be one of the best that we see this year. The team from Hennessey Performance wanted to make a video of the new Demon with a Christmas Tree strapped to the roof, but Dodge couldn’t get them one in time for this stunt. Instead, FCA sent over a new Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody and HPE tied their Christmas Tree to the 707hp muscle car instead.

The results are likely better than they would have been for the Demon, with the Hellcat hitting a higher top speed than the Demon is capable of on the Continental Tire test car.

Widebody Hellcat Hauling a Christmas Tree

In the video below, John Hennessey explains how this interesting stunt came above and we watch as some of his employees tie the tree to the aftermarket roof rack. We learn that they made a baseline run with the Widebody Hellcat and hit 177 miles per hour, so in addition to seeing how well a tree will stay on the car at high speed, we get to see if the added drag makes any difference on the big end.

There are cameras inside and outside of the Hellcat Challenger, giving us a look at the driver, the speedometer and the tree during the high speed run. There are also cameras in the air and along the side of the track, so we get to see this unusual high speed run from many different angles.

It takes some time, but the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody with a Christmas Tree strapped to the roof hit a top speed of 174 miles per hour. Hennessey says that this run makes this the world’s fastest Christmas Tree and they celebrate with a big, smoky burnout.

Crank up your speakers and enjoy this video of a Hellcat Challenger carrying the world’s fastest Christmas Tree.
