Ram: million-truck recall

by David Zatz on

Ram is recalling around one and a half million pickups, to repair the interlock that keeps drivers from accidentally shifting out of Park without their feet on the brake (and without a key in the ignition).

The problem affects many 2009-2017 trucks (including chassis cabs) with a column shifter — pickups with “the Knob” or floor mounted shifters do not have it.

The issue has, surprisingly, already been linked to seven injuries and some accidents.

The company itself found the issue, when reviewing warranty data. Vehicles that are idled for long periods in Park, with the brake pedal pushed down, can cause high temperatures, are most susceptible to the heat-related problem.

Owners can avoid problems, while they await the repair work, by using the parking brake when stopped, and by not leaving children unattended in their trucks.

Those curious about Ram sales by country can note that the recall affects 1.48 million US trucks, around 250,000 sold in Canada, nearly 43,000 sold in Mexico, and 14,950 elsewhere.

The problem does not affect Rams built after December 31, 2016. The specific list of affected vehicles, except for those built after December 31, 2016, is:

  • 2010-17 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups
  • 2011-17 Ram chassis cabs
  • 2009-17 Ram 1500 pickups
