Kidde recall spreads across FCA US

by David Zatz on

Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles have all been recalled to replace Kidde fire extinguishers that come along for the ride — from 2004 Durangos to 2018 Pacificas — as part of the Roadside Emergency Kit. If your vehicle does not have the kit, there’s no recall on your car; the company apparently sold 62,042 kits.

An enormous number of plastic-handled and “pindicator” Kidde fire extinguishers have been recalled generally, and it’s just now reaching cars, trailers, RVs, and trucks. The problem is that the extinguishers might not work, or that the nozzle could be jettisoned with some force.

FCA US vehicles listed in the recall are listed below. Other cars and trucks may have the kit, but with a different fire extinguisher.

  • 2018 Pacifica
  • 2014-16 Town & Country
  • 2007 Caliber
  • 2009 Challenger
  • 2016 Charger
  • 2015-16 Dart
  • 2004 Durango
  • 2014-16 Grand Caravan
  • 2014 Journey
  • 2014-16 Cherokee
  • 2017 Compass
  • 2011 Patriot
  • 2012 and 2015 Ram 1500, 2013-18 Ram 2500, 2012-18 Ram 3500
  • 2012-18 Ram chassis cabs
  • 2015-17 ProMaster and 2015-17 ProMaster City

Many car owners have an extinguisher in their garage, kitchen, or trunk; if they are subject to the recall, Kidde will send a new one for free (in one case, a far better one than the returned unit). The replacements have metal handles. Owners are required to mail back the old units, at the company’s expense.

FCA’s recall starts on February 9, 2018, with recall T82.
