2018 Stelvio Quadrifoglio: cheaper than Trackhawk

by David Zatz on

Should you get the 707 horsepower Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, which does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds (and can tow 7,200 pounds), or the lighter 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio? The Trackhawk starts at $85,900 (plus destination), but the Stelvio is a snip at a mere $79,995. That gap narrows somewhat with the Alfa’s higher destination charge, admittedly.

The Quadrifoglio uses an engine that’s half the size of the big Hellcat 6.2 — a 2.9-liter V6, using direct injection and two turbochargers to reach 505 horsepower. (That’s 30 hp more than the Grand Cherokee SRT, which lists for $67,395.)

The Hellcat-powered Grand Cherokee costs a bit more, but cuts over half a second off the 0-60 time; the Trackhawk claims 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, while the Stelvio Qudrifoglio lags behind at a slovenly 3.9 seconds. Both outclass the former Jeep speed leader, the Grand Cherokee SRT, with a 6.4 liter V8 and 5.3 second 0-60 time.

All three have a single transmission, an eight-speed automatic designed by ZF.

The Stelvio Quadrifoglio has 443 pound-feet of torque; the midsize crossover lapped the Nürburgring in a record 7:51.7, the fastest time ever posted by a production SUV. Its light weight comes partly from a class-exclusive carbon fiber driveshaft, along with carbon-fiber-shell seats.
