NYC Launch: Maserati Levante Trofeo

by David Zatz on

Ten minutes ago, Maserati revealed the first V8-powered Levante at the New York Auto Show. The Levante Trofeo can race from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of over 186 mph.

The 3.8-litre twin turbo Ferrari-built V8 engine delivers 590 horsepower at 6,250 rpm, and 538 lb-ft of torque from 2,250 to 5,000 rpm — the highest output per liter of any Maserati engine. The Trofeo uses all wheel drive to put the power to the ground.

The car was launched to storm graphics and sounds, with smoke and lightning; Maserati CEO Tim Kuniskis, who moved to the Italian brand from Dodge, said, “When you play with the elements you end up in a storm.”

Restyling was mainly focused on the lower front fascia and the rear bumper; the SUV has 22-inch forged aluminium “Orione” wheels, the largest ever fitted on a Maserati, sold in both polished and matte finishes.

To help with airflow, Trofeo has carbon fibre side bezel blades and a carbon fibre splitter. TheSUV also has full matrix LED headlights and performance painted brake calipers in red, blue, black, silver or yellow. “Saetta” Trofeo logos adorn the c-pillars.

Numerous exterior pieces are made of high-gloss carbon fibre; the hood is unique to the V8, with high-gloss carbon fibre and vents.  The cylinder heads and intake manifolds are painted red.

The inside is done in “Pieno Fiore” leather in black, red, or tan.  The interior has other touches, such as matte carbon fibre trim. The standard stereo is a 1,280-watt, 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround audio system.

Production starts this summer at the refurbished Maserati plant in Mirafiori (Turin), Italy. The fastest Levante in Maserati history is initially intended for overseas export markets, including the U.S. and Canada.

The Ferrari engine was updated with a new crankcase,  crankshaft assembly, oil pump, auxiliary belt, wiring, and turbochargers. It also has new heads, cams, valves, pistons, and rods.  The car itself has a 50/50 weight balance, with a double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear.  A new “Corsa” driving mode was added to normal, ICE, Sport, and Off-Road. “Corsa” increases engine response and opens exhaust valves in acceleration, provides faster gear shifting, lowers the suspension height, provides sportier Skyhook damping, optimizes the AWD settings, and interacts with Traction Control and ESP systems. This is the first Levante to use the  Maserati Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) dynamics system.

A limited Levante Trofeo launch edition car is in matte Grigio Lava paint with matte finished 22-inch wheels, red brake calipers, and other touches.
