2019 Challenger Hellcat Redeye packs 797 horsepower

This morning, Dodge announced that the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye will arrive for the 2019 model year with a whopping 797 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque, making this the most powerful production road car from an American automaker for 2019 – comfortably beating the Corvette ZR1 at just 755 horsepower. We have long-known that there was more Hellcat power coming for 2019, but at 797 horsepower, the Hellcat Redeye exceeds our expectations.

Possessed by the Demon

The press release discussing the 2019 Dodge Challenger begins with “New 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye: Possessed by the Demon”, so as you might imagine, the 797-horsepower Mopar muscle car features many of the components of the 840-horsepower Demon.

The Hellcat Redeye is powered by a similar 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi to the one in the 2018 Demon, including the 2.7-liter supercharger, stronger (than the original Hellcat) engine internals, stronger valve train components, an improved oiling system and an upgraded fuel system with two duel-stage pumps. The Hellcat Redeye also wears the new dual-snorkel hood design that works with a new air inlet box that draws air from the hood scoops, the driver’s side headlight and a new inlet near the driver’s side wheel liner.

When running on pump gas at 14.5 pounds of boost, this new Hellcat Redeye engine delivers 797 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful American engine for the 2019 model year and the second most powered American production road-going engine – trailing only the 2018 Demon, of course.

 

In addition to the Demon engine bits, the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye utilizes a handful of other high performance features from the 840-horsepower model. First, the Torque Reserve system allows the car to brake-boost up to 3.9-pounds of boost, allowing for 55% more engine torque on launch. The SRT Power Chiller an the After-Run Chiller systems are both included, so the Redeye can use the air conditioning system to cool the intercooler while the After-Run system will help to reduce engine temperatures between track passes. The Redeye also features Line Lock and the Launch Control system.

Helping to put all of that power to the ground is a high-strength steel driveshaft and 41-spline axles, and while a 2.62 rear gearset is standard – Hellcat Redeye buyers can also opt for a 3.09, similar to the Demon. However, unlike the Demon, the Hellcat Redeye comes with the same Pirelli PZero tires as the current Hellcat models, measuring 275mm wide on standard-body cars and 305mm on widebody cars. Like the Demon, the Hellcat Redeye is only available with the 8-speed automatic transmission, but you can still get the standard Hellcat with the 6-speed manual.

Speaking of widebody packages, the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye can be ordered as a standard-body or widebody, but it is safe to say that anyone who buys one of these 797-horsepower muscle cars will want to immediately buy stickier tires for the back.

As for the rest of the car, the Hellcat Redeye is the same as the original Hellcat. This includes huge Brembo brakes all around with 6-piston calipers up front and 4-piston stoppers out back, adaptive suspension, adaptive steering and a premium cabin layout with new standard cloth seats – although the Redeye package features a 220-mile per hour speedometer.

According to Dodge, in stock-to-the-tires form, the Hellcat Redeye Widebody will run the quarter mile in 10.8 seconds with a speed of 131 miles per hour, while reaching a top speed of 203 miles per hour. The standard-width Redeye will also boast a top speed of 203, but it “only” runs an 11.1 at 131 miles per hour. Anyone who knows anything about drag racing will tell you that based on the trap speeds of 131 miles per hour, the Redeye has potential to run a far quicker elapsed time and 10.8 or 11.1. With drag radials, we can expect to see the Hellcat Redeye cars running well into the mid-to-low 10s.

Finally, in addition to everything mentioned above, the Hellcat Redeye can be ordered with a new, larger rear spoiler (the current spoiler design is standard) and a new Hellcat head badge with a red eye.

More Power for the Hellcat

While the biggest news for the 2019 Dodge Challenger is the 797-horsepower Hellcat Redeye, we should point out that the standard Hellcat also gets a bump in power. For 2019, the “normal” Hellcat Hemi will deliver 717 horsepower and 656 lb-ft of torque – improvements of 10 horsepower and 6 lb-ft of torque over the current Hellcat.

We don’t have any pricing information or exact arrival times, but Dodge has promised that 2019 Challengers will begin reaching dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2018, with production beginning in “the fall”.
