Mopar decisively won the 2018 minivan race

by David Zatz on

In shades of minivan news of the past, the best selling minivans in America for 2018 were the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Pacifica.

The Caravan, despite being the oldest minivan you can buy (redesigned for 2008 and refreshed for 2011), managed a massive 21% sales gain and finished the year with 151,927 sales. That may have been less than its historical sales, but it was more than enough to take the #1 spot. The #2 spot was taken by the Chrysler Pacifica, with 118,322 sales (up by 48 from 2017).

The Honda Odyssey, long the Caravan’s nemesis, scored #3 because of Toyota’s oddly plummeting sales; the Odyssey was up 6% to 106,327, but it seems that all its sales rise was given up by Toyota, whose Sienna dropped 21% to 87,672. The Toyota has generally enjoyed higher quality ratings than the Honda, but both companies are seen by most buyers as good.

Volkswagen is getting into the minivan space, but they may fare no better than Kia, whose Sedona fell 25% to just 17,928 sales for the year. The Sedona is comparable to the short-wheelbase  Caravan,  Voyager, and Town & Country before 2008: a bargain-priced minivan of reasonable size. With the Caravan heavily discounted, though, there didn’t seem to be much space for the Sedona.

For all the pundits’ claims that minivan sales are falling to nothing, it’s worth pointing out that 2018 minivan sales stayed within 0.5% of their 2017 numbers.
