Challenger 1320 Approved for NHRA Stock, Super Stock Classes

by Patrick Rall on

Last year, Dodge rolled out the Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320, a naturally aspirated muscle car inspired by the 2018 Challenger Demon. The 1320 comes with a lightened-up interior, track-tuned suspension with Drag Mode, drag radial tires, heavy duty axles and an assortment of track tech goodies from the Demon, including a TransBrake, Torque Reserve, Line Lock and an elaborate launch assist system.

When coupled with the 392-cubic inch Hemi, this Mopar muscle car can cover the quarter mile in just 11.7 seconds with a trap speed of 115 miles per hour. Those numbers make the Challenger 1320 the quickest naturally aspirated, factory-built muscle car ever.

Considering the design and pedigree of the Challenger 1320, it should come as no surprise that the 485-horsepower Dodge has been approved by the NHRA for use in the Stock and Super Stock classes. FCA announced today that the National Hot Rod Association has officially given the 1320 the greenlight for competition use, so owners who want to do some pretty serious drag racing can do so with the same Challenger that they drive to and from work.

“With the new 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 hitting showrooms, we know it’s just a short time before the ‘Angry Bee’ is buzzing the quarter-mile in NHRA and NMCA competition,” said Steve Beahm, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. “The 1320 brings the drag racing technology we launched on the limited-production Demon and pairs it with the proven 392 HEMI engine to create a blank canvas for the serious grassroots drag racer who may have one car that needs to do double duty — both at the drag strip and on the street.”

NHRA Stock and Super Stock
The 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 in stock form fits right into the NHRA Stock Eliminator B stock category, but racers can make small changes to the car to move into the A stock or C stock categories. This class is one of the toughest in the world of drag racing, as the cars are required to have an unaltered body, full factory interior and almost all-stock drivetrain components. The teams can swap to a racing slick tire and they can tune the stock engine and transmission for better performance, but for the most part, the drivetrain components have to remain stock.

For reference, the current record in NHRA B stock is 10.05 at 133, so 1320 owners in running Stock Eliminator will certainly have some work to do to get that 11.70 ET down into the low 10s.

As for the Super Stock class, the 2019 Challenger 1320 plugs right into SS/FA, but it can be modified to run the SS/EA or SS/GA categories. Teams in Super Stock can make more elaborate upgrades to the engine, but the stock block, cylinder heads and induction setup is required. For reference, the class record in the SS/EA category is 9.13, with FA cars running in the high 9s and GA cars running in the low 10s.
