FCA finds a commercial-truck self-driving partner

FCA US and Aurora have signed a memorandum of understanding for to develop and deploy self-driving commercial vehicles. Aurora’s self-driving platform, “Aurora Driver,” provides level 4 autonomy, working without human intervention.

FCA and Aurora plan to use the Aurora Driver for FCA commercial vehicles, presumably including its highly regarded ProMaster vans. FCA has a similar deal with Waymo, though aimed at taxi fleets and perhaps noncommercial end-users, which plans to use over 60,000 Chrysler Pacifica minivans outfitted with Waymo technology. One primary difference between these deals, aside from the target group, is that FCA would sell Aurora-equipped vehicles through its own dealers.

Founded in 2017 by three of the world’s leaders of the self-driving vehicle industry (Chris Urmson, Sterling Anderson, and Drew Bagnell), Aurora has investments from  Amazon, Sequoia, and Greylock, with offices and testing in Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh.
