Dodge MSHS team up for incredible Woodward Dream Cruise display

by Patrick Rall on

Dodge did not have an official display at the Woodward Dream Cruise in 2017 or 2018, but for 2019, the high performance brand came storming back onto the scene in impressive fashion.

Woodward Mopar

In teaming up with the Modern Street Hemi Shootout, the huge collection of new and classic Mopar performance vehicles located in the “Pontiac Loop” along the cruise route made for one of the best displays of 2019 while maybe being the best Mopar-dedicated area in the 15 years in which I’ve been attending the event.

Dodge Absence from Woodward

For years, Dodge and Mopar had one of the most prominent corporate displays during the Woodward Dream Cruise, filling a huge parking lot at the corner of Woodward and 13 Mile Road up until 2016. After that year, the parking lot was redeveloped into a parking garage for the nearby hospital, making it impossible for the company to host their display at that location. Making matters worse, Dodge wasn’t able to locate a suitable parking lot along the route in which to host their display, so in 2017 and 2018, there was no Mopar/FCA/Dodge display at the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Fortunately, in recognizing the absence of an oasis for Mopar lovers at the legendary Detroit cruise, Dan VanHorn and his team from the Modern Street Hemi Shootout set up a display of their own in the Pontiac Loop.

Woodward

During those two years, the parking lot was packed with some of the quickest and most powerful Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram and Plymouth vehicles in the world, making it a popular destination along the route for spectators and cruisers alike.

In seeing the popularity of the Modern Street Hemi Shootout display at the Woodward Dream Cruise, Dodge/FCA teamed up with the racing series for the 2019 event.

This allowed VanHorn and his team to reserve a larger portion of the parking lot at the corner of Woodward and Orchard Lake Road, making room for more privately owned Mopars and a collection of brand new vehicles from Dodge.

Woodward

In short, having Dodge work with the Modern Street Hemi Shootout created an epic all-Mopar display in Pontiac during the Woodward Dream Cruise that rivaled the sprawling spread featured by Ford Motor Company at the other end of the route.

The MSHS/Dodge Woodward Display

First, we will talk about the Dodge aspect of the Modern Street Hemi Shootout display in Pontiac.

Woodward

The automaker sent out their familiar tractor trailer, with the sides of the huge cargo box covered in a Dodge livery. That big rig has a gigantic awning, which was extended out over the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody and the new Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition Charger Hellcat Widebody, with “product specialists” on hand to give out free swag and answer questions about the vehicles.

Woodward

Further into the large parking area, Dodge set up two large tents, one of which housed the Stars and Stripes Edition Charger and Charger, one of which housed the new Durango Pursuit and the Challenger 1320, and both of which offered welcomed shade to those folks with show cars parked around the tents.

Also, two well-known members of the Modern Street Hemi Shootout – Neichaun “Ms Mopaarr” Tatum and Josh Schwartz of High Horse Performance – parked two very familiar modern Mopar machines in one of the tents. This included Tatum’s sweet Cuda-converted, 10-second Challenger and the record-setting Hellcat Challenger known as TopCat.

Aside from the Dodge semi, the Dodge tents and the half-dozen new vehicles on display, the Modern Street Hemi Shootout area features nearly 300 of the hottest modern and classic Mopars at the Dream Cruise.

Woodward

While the show field was heavily comprised of Challengers and Chargers, there were scores of Jeeps, Ram trucks, Chrysler 300s and even a few classic Plymouths – one of which is the Hellcat-powered beast owned by John Gaddy.

Woodward

This huge group of privately owned Mopars made the MSHS/Dodge display one of the best Mopar-themed display areas that I have experienced in my years of attending the Dream Cruise.

Woodward

While the old Dodge display at 13 Mile was great, with loads of new models and a handful of carefully chosen vehicles from private collections, I have always hoped to see a Mopar area similar to the Ford display in Ferndale, which is comprised almost entirely of privately owned cars. With this introduction of privately owned Mopars, the 2019 Dodge Woodward display offered the same size and scope as the Ford display – except the Modern Street Hemi Shootout area packs far more power than Mustang Alley.

Woodward

Finally, in addition to the hundreds of show cars, the Modern Street Hemi Shootout had a mobile dyno, a ton of seating space for tents along Woodward Avenue and a terrific barbecue lunch buffet that was reserved specifically for those folks who bought a parking pass for the event.

Woodward

So, on the behalf of everyone who spent time in the Modern Street Hemi Shootout lot at the Woodward Dream Cruise, I want to thank Dodge, Dan VanHorn and his team for creating an incredible all-Mopar space at the legendary Detroit event.

Woodward

It is definitely something that the Mopar community hopes to see continued for years to come and as someone who has displayed a car there in each of the past three years, I suggest that every Mopar lover buy a parking pass for the lot next year. In-and-out privileges makes for relaxed cruising without the fear of losing your parking spot, the food and drinks are provided with private bathrooms and the display field is like nothing else at the Woodward Dream Cruise.
