Modern Street Hemi Shootout moves Detroit area event to Lapeer Dragway

by Patrick Rall on

The sixth event on the 2019 Modern Street Hemi Shootout schedule is set for August 16th, but it was just announced that the racing portion of the weekend of fun in the Motor City will be held at Lapeer International Dragway in Lapeer, Michigan – not at Milan Dragway as initially planned. HEMI’nsanity, as it is better known, has been held at Milan Dragway for the past two years, but the series organizers announced this morning that the racing program will be held on the 16th at Lapeer International Dragway.

This is the official statement from the event organizers:

Due to unfortunate circumstances, HEMI’nsanity has moved its drag racing program to Lapeer Dragway. We appreciate everyone’s understanding in this venue change and we are thankful Lapeer is able to accommodate the Modern Street HEMI Shootout.

Friday Aug 16th
Lapeer Dragway
Gates open at 1pm
Racing 2pm -10pm

If you registered to race at Milan, you don’t have to do anything special, other than show up at the track in Lapeer, which is about 90 minutes north of Milan. Obviously, this venue change is an important piece of information for those looking to race or to simply watch a collection of the world’s quickest street-legal modern Mopars in action.

More importantly, Lapeer’s schedule allows the Modern Street Hemi Shootout an extra day of racing on August 15th. If you originally only signed up for racing on the 16th and you would like to run on the 15th as well, click here for more information on the Thursday track rental.

For those racers who are unfamiliar with Lapeer – or for those folks who have raced at Lapeer years ago and are wondering why on Earth the MSHS would want to race there, we should point out that the track is under new ownership. Since buying the facility, William Jennings has invested a tremendous amount of money in an effort to create the best track in Michigan. So far, he has installed an entirely new racing surface along with cleaning up the pits and the rest of the grounds, but he has even bigger plans for the future which include indoor seating and elevated seating for a unique view of the action.

Moving the HEMI’nsanity event to Lapeer is great for racers who want to spend two days racing in the Detroit area before enjoying the Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday the 17th, but it is also great for Lapeer International Dragway to host the premium modern Mopar racing series, so while the drive might be a little longer for some people, this move will prove to be a good one for racers, spectators and the track itself.
