Jeep, AM General doing new military vehicle

by David Zatz on

Long ago, American Motors Corporation (AMC) divided Jeep into two companies—the military group, which went into a new company dubbed AM General, and a civilian group which stayed with AMC. It was the only way to bring in a massive new investment from Renault without violating rules on American ownership of military contractors.

Many know AM General from its “Humvee” military vehicles, and from its partnership with General Motors to create the Hummer civilian vehicles based both on the Humvee itself and on various Chevys.

The two groups came back together to collaborate on a concept vehicle, the Jeep Gladiator XMT; it draws on Jeep’s existing design and AM General’s greater knowledge of modern military needs.  XMT stands for Extreme Military Grade.

At the moment, according to Jeep chief Jim Morrison, the partners are “gauging interest and gathering feedback.” If there is interest, production could begin in late 2020, with a choice of gasoline and diesel versions.
