Over 150,000 prior-gen Ram 1500 diesels recalled

by David Zatz on

If you ever wondered just how popular the Ram 1500 diesel was, now you can get a clue from the latest recall: 107,898 2014-19 Ram 1500s have been recalled due to a problem with the diesel’s EGR coolers.

What’s more, another 50,159 Ram 1500 diesels in Canada are being recalled, a stunning number which suggests that the truck was far more popular (per capita) in Canada than in the United States. Canada’s vehicle market is roughly 10% of the size of the United States’ market, and while FCA’s share in Canada is considerably higher than in the United States, it’s certainly not four or five times as high. (1,730 Ram 1500 diesels outside of the U.S. and Canada are also being recalled, an unsurprisingly small number.)

The recall itself is for coolant loss through microscopic cracks in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) coolers; cooled EGR is a technique which helps increase performance. FCA said it was aware of a small number of fires, with four minor injuries resulting from owners trying to put out fires with extinguishers.

The recall does not affect the redesigned 2020 Ram 1500, the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel (which used the same engine), or any gasoline-powered Ram pickup. Ram 2500-5500 trucks use Cummins diesels, and are likewise unaffected.
