15 million Chrysler minivans sold

by David Zatz on

The creator of the minivan has now sold 15 million of the comfortable, utilitarian vehicles, thanks partly to its continuing high market share—currently at 54%, including the Pacifica, Grand Caravan, and Voyager.  Chrysler minivans were influential enough to merit their own biography [minivan book].

Special employee pricing on 2020 Pacificas, excluding the plug-in hybrids, starts today, making the vans more attractive. Anyone can buy or lease an eligible FCA vehicle, including the Chrysler Pacifica, at a special Employee Price incentive from a participating dealership through January 2, 2020. Buyers can also opt for the newly-introduced Red S Editions (not available with red paint).

Minivans have not only been their own segment, but arguably ushered in the modern-day crossover; crossovers may be less space-efficient, but minivans made it acceptable to drive cars that weren’t coupes, sedans, or hatchbacks, dramatically outselling vehicles such as the Jeep Wagoneer and the later Jeep Cherokee and Ford Explorer.

The Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan is America’s best-selling minivan series of all time, and continues to lead in sales.

Here are 15 fun facts, one for each million minivans:

  • Chrysler started investigating minivans in 1972; when the project was finally approved, it was coded “T-115,” and the term “minivan” had not yet been used (the story of those early years is will be in the second edition of the minivan book)
  • The first minivan, a Plymouth Voyager, rolled off the assembly line on November 2, 1983 (as a 1984 model year vehicle); it has sometimes been shown as a Dodge
  • FCA has been the No. 1 selling minivan manufacturer every year since inventing the minivan segment
  • FCA has produced enough minivans to drive the entire population of more than 100 countries, including Zimbabwe (14 million+), Belgium (11 million+) and Greece (10 million+)
  • The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica is the sixth generation of the modern minivan
  • One out of every three Chrysler Pacifica models sold features the popular S Appearance package
  • Chrysler Pacifica has earned more than 120 honors and industry accolades, making it the most awarded minivan over the last three years
  • FCA has innovated 115 minivan firsts (the code “T-115” was prescient”)
  • The first luxury minivan was officially the 1990 Chrysler Town & Country, though, really, it was mainly a Voyager with leather; the 1991 Town & Country could be called a luxury minivan more easily
  • First minivan to offer integrated child seat (1992)
  • First minivan with fold-into-the-floor (Stow ’n Go) seating and storage system (2004)
  • First minivan to offer dual rear seat video system able to play different media at same time (2007)
  • First minivan to offer Blind Spot Monitoring System (2009)
  • First and only electrified minivan with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (2017)
  • The Pacifica Hybrid ran the EPA test cycle without dipping into the gas tank
