Peugeot’s new trucks could be the new Ram 1200 — but not in the USA

Peugeot, in partnership with a Chinese company, has released specs and photos of its new pickup trucks. Running the same class as the current Mitsubishi L200 / Ram 1200 / Fiat Fullback (and the old Dodge Dakota), this pickup looks like a “lifestyle truck” but is designed for commercial use. However, given the target market, it’s unlikely to meet safety and marketing standards for the United States without considerable (and expensive) re-engineering.

Dubbed the Peugeot Landtrek, the pickup’s towing capacity is a hefty 3.5 metric tons  (7,716 pounds), putting it into midlevel Ram 1500 turf. It was also designed from the start to be robust in tough conditions.

While most of the pictured trucks have a large cab, a regular cab and chassis cab are available. Engines include both gasoline (petrol) and diesel variants, and there are “workhorse and multipurpose” versions so the same design can be a commercial or family truck. It’s fairly short, at 209 inches with the double cab/short bed or 213 inches with the single cab/long bed. Payload is around 2,200 pounds in most versions, with special versions able to carry 2,646 pounds. Buyers of the single cab and commercial versions can delete the rear bumper, where legal, for a 180° tailgate opening.

Peugeot Landtrek

Unlike Peugeot cars and crossovers, the truck will have a 4×4 option. The interior is “inspired by” the Peugeot 508, with a 10” HD screen at the top of the dashboard; the company claims to have tried to translate their larger cars’ amenities into the pickup, depending on the version, e.g. by having 27 liters of storage in the cab. Electronics include automatic dual zone air conditioning, CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10 GB hard drive. There are six airbags, trailer sway control, lane departure warning, and one to four cameras (an off-road camera is in the passenger rear-view mirror) with a 360° panoramic view.

The 150-horsepower diesel has 258 pound-feet of torque, and is connected to a six-speed Getrag manual transmission (Chrysler used Getrag for many of its turbo cars); mixed fuel economy in EU standards is around 27 mpg US (actual EPA ratings would likely be lower). The gasoline engine is a turbocharged 2.4, with 210 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque; buyers can choose the Getrag manual or six-speed automatic with Sport and Economy modes. Despite the reasonably good power, acceleration is leisurely with 0-62 mph coming in 14.9 to 15.8 seconds from the diesel, and 11.2 to 13 seconds from the gasoline motor (depending on the chosen cabin,  transmission, and RWD vs 4×4 choice). Fuel economy ranges from European-standard 7.8 to 11 liters/100km, around 21 to 27 mpg if directly translated (EPA figures would likely to lower due to testing differences).

The standard mode is rear wheel drive; the 4×4 has a dual-speed gearbox with 2.7:1 gearing. The rear differential has electronic locking.

The offroad dimensions are impressive, with 23.6 inches of water crossing, a 29°-30° approach angle, 27° or 26° departure angle, 25° breakover, and ground clearance of 8.4 or 9.25 inches.

The truck will be sold in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and elsewhere—but not Europe, the United States, or Canada. However, Ram must have its eye on this pickup, given the increasing heat of the midsize car market.
