Chrysler shows 25th anniversary minivan

 

Twenty-five years after it first invented the modern minivan, Chrysler is introducing the “25th Anniversary Edition” special model. This model features new interior premium appointments, such as a Dark Slate Gray color palette, Blackwood accents, satin finishes and new leather seats with French-seamed stitching. Special “25th Anniversary Edition” badging is incorporated inside and out.

More jobs ending at Chrysler today

The job cuts continue at Chrysler. About 250 salaried employees will be losing their jobs and most of them will learn that today is their last day at Chrysler.

The layoffs are part of a previously announced plan to eliminate 1,000 salaried positions by the end of the month.  In a statement issued Thursday, Chrysler spokesman David Elshoff said three-fourths of the goal had been achieved through voluntary separations but added,

Chrysler invests in Kokomo casting plant for Phoenix engines

According to the Kokomo Tribune, Chrysler will invest $68 million in the Kokomo Casting Plant to make engine blocks for Chrysler’s new Phoenix six-cylinder engine and parts for the automated manual transmissions to be built in Tipton County. The Kokomo Common Council is considering a tax abatement on the new equipment on Monday; even with the tax breaks, around $2.76 million would be added to local tax revenue over ten years.

Dodge Ram Lone Star debuts

Dodge has introduced the Lone Star Edition Dodge Ram 1500, a Texas-exclusive model honoring Dodge’s largest single truck market. The modified Ram Crew Cab 1500 SLT model includes the RamBox, 390 horsepower Hemi, a lighting group, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, overhead console, and Lone Star badging. The package is $1,500 above the normal cost of a Ram 1500 Hemi, a savings of $750 over getting the items separately (other than the exclusive Lone Star badging).

House approves automaker loans; bill goes to Senate

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to approve a larger spending bill which includes an initial $7.5 billion to fund loans to automakers and administration of the loan program, with a goal of retooling older plants to build more fuel efficient vehicles. The vote was 370 to 58; the bill will keep the government running in the new fiscal year, which starts on October 1, and is expected to win easy passage.

Cerberus to buy the rest of Chrysler from Daimler: no longer a rumor

According to Reuters, as quoted in Automotive News, Cerberus is planning to buy the remaining 19.9% of Chrysler from Daimler. The deal could be finalized by the end of October, and would be a strong vote of confidence in Chrysler’s future.

Daimler spokesman Han Tjan has confirmed that Daimler is talking with Cerberus about selling its remaining stake in Chrysler.

Chrysler shows 4 new electric models on CNBC (updated)

Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” this morning to discuss the state of Chrysler, the auto industry, government funding and to unveil four new Chrysler vehicles.

Nardelli and Lebeau drove the all-electric Dodge EV sports coupe with a lithium-ion battery pack which can hit 60 in under five seconds and has a range of 150-200 miles between charges. Recharging takes 4 hours on 220V and 8 hours on 110V household current.

Chrysler hikes up gas mileage by 8% on 4-liter minivans

Chrysler modified the powertrain of the 4-liter Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan to achieve a landmark 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, which the company claims is unbeaten among minivans. The engine is assisted by a “minivan first” six-speed automatic transmission, and previously was rated at 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway.

The optimized 4-liter engine now produces 251 hp (189kW) and 259 lb.-ft.
