Chrysler hikes up gas mileage by 8% on 4-liter minivans

Chrysler modified the powertrain of the 4-liter Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan to achieve a landmark 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, which the company claims is unbeaten among minivans. The engine is assisted by a “minivan first” six-speed automatic transmission, and previously was rated at 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway.

The optimized 4-liter engine now produces 251 hp (189kW) and 259 lb.-ft.

Jeep J8 now available in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East

The Jeep J8, a heavy duty version of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, is now available in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. It was engineered for military use, and is also appropriate for commercial, government, and humanitarian applications. Journalists who drove the J8 at Euro Camp Jeep were generally enthusiastic about the vehicle.

Dodge Viper sets new track record in Germany

The 2009 Dodge Viper ACR has broken the street-legal production car record at Germany’s Nürburgring race track, with a third-party certified time of 7 minutes, 22.1 seconds.

Press says Chrysler will shrink to match “reality”

Chrysler Vice Chairman Jim Press predicts the company should return to profitability as it cuts its operations to match “reality.”

“We could be the company that makes this transition to a viable model for a U.S.-based manufacturer going forward, if we base it on reality,” Press, said at a Motor Press Guild presentation in Los Angeles.

Press told the audience that Chrysler has determined that it has a better chance of turning a profit by selling fewer cars.

Kuwait buys 150 Dodge Charger police cars

Kuwaiti representatives visited Chrysler in Warren to approve the design of three different types of Dodge Charger police cars, 150 of which will be exported to Kuwait. This was the final step of a procurement process begun nearly 11 months ago; the police version of the Charger has been available in the Middle East for around a year.

JeepNewsNow reported that an Illinois woman was excited to discover she had purchased (used) Senator Barack Obama’s 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (he had also owned a Neon). Their story also noted that, when asked, John McCain did not know what kind of car he owned or drove; but it turned out to be a Cadillac CTS.

Russians see new Dodge, Jeep

The Jeep Liberty (sold outside the U.S. as the Cherokee) and Journey were introduced to the Russian buying public this week at the 2008 Moscow International Motor Show. Last year, Chrysler signed with Chrysler Russia SAO to be the general importer for the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands. Russia is now one of Chrysler’s top ten markets by volume; the Russian car market has grown dramatically in recent years, with annual sales of over 1.6 million vehicles.
