02 Neon tranny swap that hit a snag

5323 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ImperialCrown
While attempting to swap a tranny on our 02 neon, I noticed something diffrent between the tranny i took out and the tranny I was about to install.
The socket for the drive axle coming out of the tranny on the original has a 4 inch aluminum casing extension behind it that the replacement dosent have. We were aware the the 02 was a unique year and only an 02 tranny would work, but are there are 2 diffrent 02 trannys? Is this tranny that is diffrent from the original totally incompatible with my car, or can I just use a longer axle? I read that Dodge changed the tranny mid-year is this the diffrence? if so, is it the gear ratio or how many speeds it has? Which version did i pull out of my car? The replacement tranny I have has a tag
P04800269AB and no extension behind the axle socket, 3-speed or 4-speed? Teh tranny that i pulled had no tag but the housing # on the bottom is782Ad FF and above the axle socket on the housing is 782AD MM. Vin # is 1B3ES56C42D590649. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Does the floor shifter say PRND21 or PRND3L?
Your car is a 3-speed and they sent you a 4-speed (4800269AB).
This may be an early production 2002 Neon and they were using up the last of the 3-speeds. A 2001 Neon 31TH transaxle should work.
The 1995-early 2002's were 31TH. Later 2002's-on were the 40TE/41TE.
The 2.0L 31TH was unchanged for many years. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
An interchange manual would help to verify the interchange.
