D wasn't' really there to stand for Dodge. It was to identify the platform:
D100 (2wd pickup on "D" platform).
W100 (4wd version of the D pickup platform).
B100 or A100 (vans on the B or A platform).

It would have taken minutes to decide to sue over "F"-100. I am sure it was trademarked.
