I've been working on this truck from my dad, almost have the transmission ready to install, there is no drive pinion in the housing of the transmission tail. The cable is routed to a little black box along the frame and another cable comes out of the box and is routed to the transfer case. Has anyone ever seen this? Also, the speedometer wasn't working last time I drove it, it stayed at about 15 no matter what speed you were going, once in a while it would rise to about 22 and stay there but eventually it would settle back at around 15 while driving. Can I purchase a new pinion, install it and just route my cable there? I don't like not having a working speedometer, especially if my wife is also going to drive this truck. Also, the truck has 33 X 12.5 15 tires, is there a special pinion I would need to purchase for those size tires since they aren't stock to have an accurate reading? Thanks!

Thanks for the speedy reply Imperial Crown! I went to look at the black box, no wires, it says Speedo Correct on it. So I'm guessing as some point someone added an aftermarket gear compensator for the larger tires. Dad bought this truck almost 5 or 6 years ago to haul wood but never drove it because the transmission slipped in all gears so we've never known much about this truck other than he got it from a kid who wanted a mudder/rock crawler and had some work done to it prior to selling it to my dad. I've just never seen a speedo cable go to the transfer case. There is no pinion drive gear in the tail shaft and there is a knurled cap over the connector where the cable would normally go on the tail shaft. I'll try the grease first, if that doesn't solve the problem, I may use your gear selection guide to find the correct gear needed and add a pinion drive gear to the tail shaft. Thanks again! This place is awesome! Have a great day!

GLHS60, that's it only painted black! So probably not a good idea to put a drive gear in the tail housing then. I'll pull the cables and lube them to see if I can revive the speedo. Thanks to you both for the help and info! I'll get that factory service manual also! Thanks!
