Welcome to Allpar. Do the instructions offer any good ideas?
I would think that mounted on the frame by the tank would be best as long as it is protected from the elements. A splash or dust shield could help.
The firewall may be more free of dust and splash, but I would be concerned with the high underhood temperatures.

Yes, mount the thing on the frame, level with the tank bottom. Not a bad idea to include a tip over switch to kill it if you go dirty side up. I put one on my '79 Trailduster.

And bypass the mechanical pump, do not pump through it. If you pump through it and its diaphram leaks you'll fill the crankcase with gas and there goes the engine. Fuse the line to the pump.

Good one KOG, and also, when you mount it, place a piece of rubber between the mounting bracket and the frame to reduce the HUMMMMMMMM.
