It could also be that the wrong steering wheel is on the truck. Prior to the early 1980's tilt and non-tilt wheels had different depths (which would affect the distance between the wheel and the shifter and turn signal stalk) because of different column styles. By 1986 they should have all been the same, but you have been the victim of a column or steering wheel swap when other parts were swapped.
