My shifter handle is in the wrong position and is a knuckle buster. It is only half an inch from the steering wheel. This is an 86 D150 that originally had a 318 and a 904 automatic. I bought it with a 360 and a 727 automatic. It shifts fine, but the handle has to be constantly avoided, especially when maneuvering in a parking lot.

I am looking for a parts illustration, and some tips on what might be broken or missing from the shift bowl so i can fix this. Otherwise I will need to spend money and install a floor shifter.

Thanks,

This is the original column. I looked for obvious problems with the shifter when i was replacing the ignition switch but didn't get any clues. The shifter works fine, but is just too close to the wheel. I suspect a previous owner may have disassembled the column trying to figure out how to change the ignition switch. The original was bad (bypassed) and I found a new-in-box switch behind the seat which I installed.

I found an illustration for the tilt column, but none for standard column. Haynes manual only coverd disassembly down to the ignition switch.
