I have a 1989 ramcharger with a 5.2 but I want to swap a 6.1 Hemi from a 2007 charger srt8. My friend has a 2007 charger srt8. I want to know if the engine and transmission will fit in my ramcharger.
What would I need to be able to do the swap? Any one that can give me some good advice here

Well, it is going to be a fun project to say the least. Time to break out the tape measure first, mostly in the firewall and transmission tunnel areas. Next concern is the oil pan, but there should be something available, new Hemis in B bodies and trucks have to be available so not that big a concern, otherwise it may need altered a little bit for the K member of the truck but shouldn't be that big a deal. Next is the electronics and transmission, it all needs to be swapped in unless you go standalone aftermarket, that will be fun mostly in trying to remove components you don't need, which are few, a body control module for door locks, etc., may be tied into the main computer. Sensors and gauges are a fairly easy wiring swap. Motor mounts should be available aftermarket, look for Hemi swap to B body big block, they should be available, same with trans mount. Lastly is exhaust manifold clearance for the frame rails which, that may be a small issue, but that's what the tape measure is for, so headers may be the only solution for that if they don't clear. Drive by wire gas pedal shouldn't be an issue to deal with. Other than that, sounds like a very fun project.

Fun project, but it will take a lot of time and money..Are you buying the engine from your friend, how much (I dont need to know)..Are you doing the work yourself ?

But the money for the engine, plus the parts and time for the swap you could either rebuild the 318 to 400 hp range +/- ....Its not that difficult or find a 360 engine in good shape and either add a cam,get the heads done for bigger power(really wakes them up) or get it rebuilt those can and do have more h.p and torque than a stock 6.1 Hemi for less hassle and cost..

Look around your area at shop,s who rebuild engines and say you want around 425 hp and lots of torque ! See what the price is etc..The extra money you spend on the rebuilt engine is money saved in parts buying, figuring out the electrical, computers ,fabrication, engineering to fit the 6.1 in your truck.

Is it a 4wd ? Then you cant use the trans from the 6.1 !

Now if you want to do it,go for it..If youre going to get a shop to do it,dont..You will spend more money than buying a 360 crate engine with 450 hp and 500 torque !

It all depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to work on it..Its not a quick process...Rebuilt the 318 to 400 hp is the easiest solution or a 450 hp plus 360 / 408 stroker !

Enjoy !

Get a month of MotorTrend OnDemand, and watch all the engine swap episodes of Dirt Every Day Hotrod Garage, Roadkill Garage, and Roadkill. Those guys put just about every engine into every car. It will give you a great idea of what to expect.

I know they put a lot of engines into various Dodge Trucks.

They make kits for that. Look up d150 hemi swap or w150 hemi swap. Plenty of information out there on the subject. Should work the same for ramcharger.

My friend owes me some money and is paying me with the engine but I have .onvinced him to let me take any part I need from the car to complete the swap. I will most likely get someone to do the swap that won't charge me by hour and does it for a fair price. What I mostly want to know is if there will be some parts I need that I'm not gonna be able to find or buy and get stuck.

Get the whole car if possible, give back what you don't need, which is engine, evap system (some parts may be different, guaranteed), all the electronics and wiring including the dash cluster and key assembly since it is a chip key, body computer until you can determine if you need it or not, transmission, gas pedal (it's drive by wire), and someone else will have to say whether or not you will need the ABS to match the computer and not have fault codes. Quite a lot given the different years and all, and the speedo will still have to be readjusted because the ratios are different after the fact. You may also need the shift mechanism.
