The fuel pressure regulator maintains ~46 psi fuel pressure at idle in the fuel rail to operate the fuel injectors. The excess fuel is returned to the tank. It uses intake manifold vacuum and an internal spring to regulate pressure to maintain proper pressure in the rail according to fuel volume demands.
