He may be telling the truth. The shape of the aftermarket inside rim bead ledge may let allow the OEM TPMS to fit correctly. They are fragile plastic and easily broken.

If they do fit you can swap them over, but that also increases the likely-hood of breakage which can ruin a tire guys day.
