When the ETC warning light comes on (red indicator with a lightning bolt in a venturi), a fault code is stored in the PCM. It might be able to be read with a standard engine code checker, I don't know as I've never tried anything other than the dealer STAR or WiTech tool. A 'P' code might show up in an EVIC display or an instrument cluster display self-test.
Stop by an auto parts store and ask if they can read the newer CAN bus vehicles. They may not plug it in if the light isn't active at the time.
If she is still under the 3/36 warranty, it should be covered. The throttle body or a rectifying PCM flash update may even have an extended federal emissions warranty. Only the dealer can look it up and tell you for sure.
