2014 Dodge concept cars: Challenger T/A, Viper ACR, Poison Dart, Charger Mopar

by Patrick Rall

Dodge Challenger T/A concept

The 2014 Dodge Challenger T/A concept car follows the legendary Challenger T/A package of the 1970s. The functional scoop hood with gloss black hood pins includes a Mopar induction system which brings cool air coming into the 6.4-liter legendary 392 HEMI® engine.

A Mopar front splitter works with the Mopar deck-lid spoiler to increase downforce, while "Air Catcher" headlamps with hidden LED lights add to the stream of cool air for the engine.

Underneath the extra wide 20-by-9.5-inch matte black lightweight forged aluminum wheels are Brembo six-piston calipers with two-piece slotted and vented rotors. Rear and side exhaust tips are ceramic-coated, and electronic cutouts provide a choice between a stock sound or a louder side exhaust note.

The original Challenger T/A package competed on road courses; this one has race-inspired moves to cut weight and increase chassis rigidity. The high-performance flat bottom steering wheel has perforated leather and gloss black bezels. Carbon fiber seats have a safety harness pass-through and bolsters with high grip cloth for improved lateral support. The rear seat delete and brushed aluminum closeout panels also cut weight. Any Challenger T/A needs a pistol-grip shifter, and this has one, along with a 180 mile per hour speedometer with white face gauges. The rear roll-bar enhances chassis rigidity.

Patrick Rall wrote: The Dodge brand does a fine job of reflecting historic models in new cars, and I don't know that any concept in the past has represented an old school model better than the Dodge Challenger T/A Concept.

Finished in bright Sublime Green paint with matte black trim, this car is only some body decals away from being the spittin' image of Sam Posey's 1970 Challenger T/A race car. Based on the R/T Scat Pack Challenger, this gorgeous green muscle car wears an SRT hood over the 6.4L Hemi with a concept air intake package that draws air straight through the opening in the hood while an electronic exhaust cutout system lets you pick whether you want loud - or really loud.

Further enhancing the race ready look of the Challenger T/A Concept is a Mopar front splitter, a rear spoiler with a Gurney flap design, lightweight wheels based on the Hellcat Challenger wheels, a high performance Brembo brake setup, and the "air catcher" headlight design from the Hellcat models; except the T/A Concept has the open-inner headlight on both sides. On the inside, the Challenger T/A Concept has carbon fiber Viper seats on unique aluminum tracks.

I wont pull any punches here - I absolutely love the Challenger T/A Concept. This is how a muscle car should look and every aspect of this concept is simply perfect. Even better, almost every unique component of this concept is either headed for the Mopar Accessory catalog or it could be soon. The only questionable item is the unique Shaker-inspired hood intake system, but in speaking with the engineers on hand, this intake system is made using already available components from the Shaker hood setup. I would expect to see that intake for sale in the future and when it arrives, 2015 Challenger Scat Pack owners can make their own T/A Concept.

The 2014 Dodge Viper ACR concept car sports an aggressive carbon fiber front splitter and a competition rear wing anchored to the Snake's steel skin by sculpted aluminum stanchions. Many development hours in the wind tunnel achieved balance between the wing and stanchions, as well as how these elements work in conjunction with the front splitter to maximize downforce. Carbon fiber dive planes on the front fascia and hood heat extractors flanking the front fenders add downforce.

The Dodge Viper ACR races on satin black lightweight 19-inch front and rear wheels with R6 Hoosiers, stopped by 15.4-inch Carbon Ceramic two-piece rotors with Brembo six-piston brakes, cooled by carbon fiber brake duct openings in the front fascia. There are differential cooler ducts rearward of the side windows. The ACR-style white paint is highlighted by a gloss black center stripe, accompanied by an offset Adrenaline Red stripe.

The interior cuts down to bare necessities; as with the Plymouth Road Runner, the radio amplifier, speakers, carpet, and NVH treatments have been removed to take advantage of every ounce. Every possible bezel has been replaced with carbon fiber. Alcantara suede-wrapped steering wheel, shifter, and seats provide grip through turns. A Header Red stripe adorns the 12 o'clock position of the steering wheel; the same color is used on the steering wheel badge, instrument panel badge, and interior accent stitching.

Patrick Rall wrote: The Dodge Viper ACR is one of the most successful street legal American supercars ever, with lap records that have lasted for years at tracks around the world. The Mopar community has been demanding a new American Club Racer since the new generation Viper debuted and here is it - at least in concept form.

This new Dodge Viper ACR Concept really looks ready to head to the Nürburgring, with an aggressive front splitter, carbon fiber dive planes, lightweight wheels tucker over carbon ceramic front and rear brakes and a gigantic rear wing setting this new Viper apart from anything on sale today. No proper ACR Viper would be complete without the distinctive white, black and red livery so the company has added a very similar paint and stripe design to what we saw on the previous Viper SRT10 ACR when it debuted.

This is the new Viper ACR that we have all been wanting. Now Chrysler just needs to convert it from a concept to a production model, and based on what I saw today, the parts are all ready to go.

A Mopar performance matte black aluminum hood provides a sinister, contrasting look to the "O-So-Orange" concept Dart. The hood mounted duct feeds cool ambient air directly into the air box, while an air exhauster at the rear pulls hot air from the Dodge Dart R/T Concept's intercooled turbocharged engine. [Is this the 2.0 or 1.4 turbo? We'd hope the 2.0.]

An aggressive front fascia with an enlarged grille opening increases airflow to the Dart's intercooler. New grille textures and a LED fog lamp surround join items from the Mopar Dart body kit (including a front chin splitter, side sill accents, rear three-piece spoiler, three-and-a-half inch exhaust tips, and rear fascia diffuser).

Riding on 18-inch Mopar anodized black lightweight wheels, the power of the Dodge Dart R/T Concept is harnessed by a Mopar big brake kit, and handling is improved with an adjustable coil-over suspension. Like the hood, the roof and deck-lid have a matte black finish.

Patrick Rall wrote: Finished in a stunning metallic orange and trimmed in both gloss and matte black, the Dodge Dart R/T / Poison Dart concept wears a unique front fascia and rear spoiler, as well as the Mopar hood, front chin spoiler, side sills, and rear fascia extension that are currently on sale. Those body bits all work together to give this compact sedan a far more aggressive look than any of the production packages.

The R/T Concept is also fitted with 18 inch Mopar wheels, a Mopar big brake kit, a Mopar suspension setup and dual 3.5 inch exhaust tips through which the powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder engine can announce its presence.
If you own a new Dart and you love the look of this R/T Concept, almost everything can eventually be purchased to build this car yourself - or so Mopar promises.

Dodge Charger Mopar

This is mainly a platform for new Mopar products, including a front splitter, Mopar side sills, and sill extensions "that boost handling and aerodynamic characteristics." At the rear, a Mopar valance frames the exhaust tips while a one-piece rear spoiler rises high to increase downforce.

The gloss black roof plays off the TorRed paint, and matches the Granite Chrystal low gloss Mopar 20-by-9-inch wheels. Other features are a cold air intake for the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, coil over kit, front and rear sway bars, and front and rear strut tower braces.

Patrick Rall wrote: When the new 2015 Dodge Charger reaches showrooms later this year, it will be popular for Mopar lovers who will want to customize it a bit. With that in mind, this Dodge Charger R/T Mopar Concept wears a host of additions that make this sporty sedan even sportier - even though the modifications are fairly minimal.

Up front, this Charger R/T wears a unique chin spoiler that wraps around to the wheel wells, where you find a set of 20 inch Mopar lightweight wheels that fit this black and red four-door muscle car perfectly. A Mopar suspension system has the Charger R/T Mopar Concept sitting a little tighter over the custom wheels and out back, a unique rear fascia that wraps around the exhaust tips is unlike anything available in the current Charger lineup. While I'm not sold on the rear fascia, I fully expect to see plenty of new Charger owners lining up for the chin spoiler, decklid spoiler, wheels, and suspension package when they reach the Mopar catalog.

Concept cars are often made so a car's feel can be evaluated, problems can be foreseen, and reactions of the public can be judged. Some concepts test specific ideas, colors, controls, or materials - either subtle or out of proportion, to hide what's being tested. Some are created to help designers think "out of the box." The Challenger, Prowler, PT Cruiser, and Viper were all tested as production-based concepts dressed up to hide the production intent.
