2017 Ram 2500 4x4 Off-Road Package

by David Zatz

The Ram 2500 4x4 Off-road Package combines the standard Ram 2500 with some Power Wagon features pickup owners who go off-road (nearly 35% of them). The package mainly includes suspension modifications and added equipment.

Bilstein monotube shock absorbers at all four corners are tuned for off-road use, and distribute excessive heat from rough sections of road or path; but the "Articulink" system is restricted to Power Wagons. The truck comes with Firestone LT tires (275/70R 18E or 285/60R 20E) that "clean themselves" by helping rubbish in the tread to break free under rotation.

Other standard features include a transfer case skid plate (it's at the lowest mid-point of the truck) and a rear anti-spin differential, which turns both rear wheels in tandem when torque is increased; it is normally unlocked for better drivability.

Large front tow hooks allow the Ram 2500 to become a solid anchor point for rescue or other operations (or to be rescued itself). Larger fender flares prevent whatever slings off the tires from covering the side of the truck with debris; these are either black or body-color.

Standard Hill-Descent Control, borrowed from the Power Wagon (and past Jeeps), allows drivers to control speed down steep, rugged grades with the buttons on the column shifter.

The main external giveaway is a large "4X4 OFF ROAD" on the rear corners of the bed.

Unlike the Power Wagon, buyers have many choices with the Ram 2500 4x4 Off-Road Package: Crew Cab and Mega Cab, three gasoline and two diesel powertrains, and short and long beds. It is available on all Ram trim levels, from Tradesman to Laramie Limited, and is set to go on sale in the third quarter of 2016. See dimensions, specifications, and such with comparisons to the Power Wagon.
