This was posed to me by a reader:



My best friend who has worked in a small Chrysler dealership for years spun a rod in his 3.5, He now works at a independent shop. He replaced the rod and piston in that cylinder. Rebuilt crank with bearings. Flex honed the cylinders and installed new rings. Valves ground by a very competent shop. Lash adjsuters rattled on start up and got worse. Replaced adjusters and still rattled. After much research bought the Release probe from Miller Tool. Was not able to bleed all of them in the car so removed rocker arm assemblies. After it was back together let it idle to operating temp and then shut off. Started again and cycled engine on and off every few minutes until the lifters were quiet. (About 90 minutes). The next day the lifters were noisy again for about 30 minutes. Changed the inital start up oil using 10w30 and a WIX filter making sure it had a check valve in it. Lifters rattled for about 10 minutes then good. Took for a short drive and okay. The next day the lifters rattled for 10 minutes then okay. Drove on highway and city for about 100 miles and good all day. Next day same lifter noise. Removed the driver\'s side rocker assembly and some lifers needed bleeding again.

Wow, that's interesting. I thought maybe it was a defective oil pump. I wonder what purpose those silver bolts serve?

What year and model? This is for a 2nd gen 3.5L.
If the oil is being aerolated by a leak ahead of the oil pump (i.e.- a missing or torn oil pickup screen-to-pump o-ring), the pump will suck oil foam and make for noisy lifters. No mention of silver bolts in Chrysler literature.
There is a special tool #8351 for purging air from lifters:

STANDARD PROCEDURE - HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTER BLEEDING

Use this procedure to manually bleed aerated oil from the lash adjuster and remove sponginess.
  1. Run the engine, bringing it to operating temperature in order to freshly pressurize and warm the valvetrain system oil supply.
  2. Remove cylinder head cover(s).
  3. Ensure the rocker arm is positioned on the base circle of the cam. Rotate engine as necessary.
  4. For intake rocker arm positions:
    1. Adjust Special Tool 8351 Release Probe's gauge pin to extend approximately 20 mm (0.787 in.). Then, carefully insert the release probe gauge pin into the lash adjuster service access hole.
      CAUTION: If probe tip breaks off within the lash adjuster, replace the affected rocker arm.
    2. Gently unseat lash adjuster's internal check ball.
    3. While the internal check ball is held unseated, press the rocker arm into the valve tip, allowing the lash adjuster to fully collapse. Hold this fully collapsed position for about one second, or longer.
    4. Slowly release the rocker arm, thereby allowing the lash adjuster to extend, which in turn refills the high pressure chamber with non-aerated oil.
    5. Remove probe to allow check ball to seat.
    6. Recheck for sponginess. If the lash adjuster sponginess is not completely or nearly eliminated, then repeat procedure.
    7. If the spongy condition cannot be removed, replace effected rocker arm(s).
  5. For exhaust rocker arm positions:
    1. Adjust Special Tool 8351 Release Probe gauge pin to extend approximately 20 mm (0.787 in.). Then, using two release probes, carefully insert gauge pins into the lash adjuster service access holes.
      CAUTION: If probe tip breaks off within the lash adjuster, replace the affected rocker arm.
    2. Gently unseat BOTH lash adjuster's internal check ball at the same time.
    3. While the internal check ball is held unseated, press the rocker arm into the valve tip, allowing the lash adjuster to fully collapse. Hold this fully collapsed position for about one second, or longer.
    4. Slowly release the rocker arm, thereby allowing the lash adjuster to extend, which in turn refills the high pressure chamber with non-aerated oil.
    5. Remove probes to allow check balls to seat.
    6. Recheck for sponginess. If the lash adjuster sponginess is not completely or nearly eliminated, then repeat procedure.
    7. If the spongy condition cannot be removed, replace effected rocker arm(s).
  6. Install cylinder head cover(s).
