Assuming these are LA engines, you would increase compression but strangle the engine due to the smaller ports.

You definitely get better results of using the common 318/360 heads from the police engines of the late 80s(?), or simply putting stock 360 intake valves of 1.88 in the stock 318 heads and just open the pockets up before installing them. Between dropping the compression by more than half an atmosphere and the bigger chance of intake manifold gasket leaking it is not worth the effort or hassle worrying about it. I am a firm believer of doing it once right, or don't do it at all, even if it is faster time-wise to fix it the second time because you are now familiar with the ins and outs of doing it the first time.
