It’s not really major news that Dodge will be the title sponsor for the NHRA US Nationals — since this will be their 18th year as a title sponsor. This time, though, the NHRA Dodge Hemi Challenge will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mopar-powered Plymouth Barracuda and Dodge Dart Super stock cars.
The event takes place on August 30-31, but the announcement had to be today, Hemi Day — 4/26 — the date that reflects the 426 cubic inch Hemi, whose design is still used in all current NHRA Funny Car and Top Fuel machines.
The Hemi Challenge will showcase Super Stock/A-HEMI (SS/AH) NHRA Sportsman class competitors in 1968 Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas, legendary “package” cars (built as a special package for drag racing only).
For the event, there’s a unique 42.6-pound trophy; but all 16 drivers to reach the elimination rounds will receive cash rewards. The winner will get $15,000.
Dodge supports Sportsman racers through the Dodge Top Finisher award, first introduced in 2017, which provides $500 to the Mopar-powered Stock and Super Stock competitors who advance the furthest at all 24 national events.
