I am looking for information on different transmissions (42re,44re) and any differences per application . For instance could i get a 42re out of a grand cherokee and stick it in my truck or are the gear ratios going to be different or will it even bolt up ? If anyone is up to speed on this topic any info would be helpful .

The Jeep transmission moved the starter to the opposite side I believe, that is why it won't interchange with the Dakota.

Any reason not to rebuild the transmission instead of getting a donor? Sometimes they are a waste of money.

The transmission for 1997 5.2L AN-body is the 44RE or 46RE for HD applications.
The 42RE is for the 3.9L V6. The 46RE is for the 5.2L HD/5.9L V8.
Specifically, the 2WD is 52118554 or the reman # is R2118554. The HD 2WD is 4882500 or R4882500AB for the reman.
4WD part # is 52119555 or the reman # is R2119555. The HD 4WD is 4864250 or R4864250AB for the reman.
The part # should be stamped on the case above the left front corner of the pan.
