Hello.

After searching the forum, I have not found my specific problem. I recently installed a JVC CD player in my 1995 T&C. I discovered that the rear woofers would not work unless I connected the blue wire from the radio to the antenna connection on the harness which turns on the power amp. But the speakers on the front doors, which worked before are still silent.

The original radio/tape player appears to be the Infinity III system, according to articles here. On the original harness (I added an aftermarket adapter) there is on small wire taped back to the harness which was not used before. That is all the connections I could find. I am unclear on how the 4 channel amp with front and back fader worked before.

Could someone help me with this?

If the rear woofers are working, the door woofers should be too. You have four amplifiers bolted to each of the rear speakers and door speakers. These are booster amps that work with the incoming speaker level signal from the deck. As you found, you do need to have the power antenna wire getting 12 volts to get the amp relay to turn on. You also need to have the solo wire with the female spade terminal that was back there grounded to something... that's probably the one you're referring to.

At any rate, the power antenna wire is the amp relay coil positive, and the solo wire is the negative.

It's possible (even probable) that the door speaker amps have failed. They're susceptible to bad solder joints, and getting slammed in the doors for years doesn't help them any. The amps can be repaired, but they're usually full of potting compound that's hard to deal with. My advice would be to find a 1996-1997 van with Infinity to get door speakers from - they'll interchange and you'll have a better chance of finding them working due to their position in the 3rd gen doors. Sometime in G3 they went to a different setup with the Infinity system that uses different incompatible connectors that you will have to watch out for. I believe that was in 1998-99. Just look for ones with the 4 pin connector and they should be plug and play.

Thanks for the reply. Your diagnosis sounds right so far. It is too bad I did not notice any problems with the door speakers before the Infinity tape player died. But I do seem to remember that I could pan the sound all the way to the back or front so the door speakers were either low or out. The middle position gave the most bass because the door speakers were louder then.

Am I mistaken in thinking they had their own "channel?" Or are they in line with either the back or front speakers? It is not likely that I will invest in replacement speakers if the amps have failed. (I also thought I read on this site that they eventually went to a single power amp on the Infinity III) The system actually sounds quite good since I got the back woofers working now. I just thought maybe there was a mistake in the wiring somewhere.

The single amp started in some vehciles in 1991, but a 1995 van still had amps on the speakers.
The radio only has 4 outputs: left front and rear, right front and rear. The front door speakers and the dash both share the same front feed..

Since the front door and dash speakers share the same front feed, I am wondering about a jumper I saw in one of the wiring diagrams online. I think it said "front speaker only." There was an unused connector taped to the harness that looked female, and might have had a jumper that worked loose? I am not sure now where I saw the diagram and if it applied to my model, but this might be an option to disable the door speakers.

First, I would check the two outer pins on each door speaker connector for 12 volts (wire colors on the speaker end will be red and gray). If you have power but the speaker's not working, the amp's either dead or not getting a signal on the inner two wires.

Indeed, the door speakers are fed using the front channel head unit outputs.

No clue about jumpers... this is the first I'm hearing about it. The only single female connector behind the radio you should have is the ground for the amp relay coil. As mentioned, that should be grounded. If it wasn't before, it could be someone in the past added Infinity and messed around with the wiring. In that case, you'll need to figure out what they did first.
