G'Day, I am trying to get info on the '78 Midnite Express Truck as I believe it was a very limited edition in the '78 year range.
I believe it was to be a Black version of the Little Red Express Truck except it had a 440 instead of the 360, I did read somewhere it had a 400ci but most reports say 440. It was also supposed to be an auto as well with the same running gear as the LRE and same wood work, but the graphics were Silver. Phoenix Graphics have a kit which is Gold so maybe that is correct then.
It wasn't a Warlock which had many different engines and colors.
Was it more a "Show Truck" than go as a 440 would have made it fairly quick if everything else was the same as the 360 LRE.
I could be looking for a stable mate for my '79 LRE.
Any and all info would be appreciated, thank - you

There are a couple out there, do a search and you can see several of them.

A friend of mine was really into Mopars right as these limited editions came out, and I'm fairly sure that he said that they were equipped with the same high-output 360 that the Lil Red Express had.

Keep in mind, in '78, the Lil Red Express was the quickest American assembly-line produced vehicle produced even beating the Corvette, as the half-ton trucks had lesser emissions restrictions than passenger cars. I would be surprised if they made a big block version for such a limited run, given the poor performance of the big block that year.

Same friend who talked about the limited edition '78 vehicles has a '78 Magnum XE with the 400 4bbl factory towing package and only about 8000 miles on it, and it was so weak from the factory that it couldn't spin a tire with the open differential. He has since rectified that, but if that's indicative of the performance at the end of the '70s, then I would be greatly surprised if the Midnite Express, the Midnite Charger, or any other limited edition vehicle was any better than the Lil Red Express.

It appears that the Midnight Express, like the Warlock, could be equipped with just about any engine including the 440. But the 360 in the Lil Red still seemed to be the hot ticket over the other engines.

1978 was that ironic year when a Dodge or Plymouth 4 door sedan could be had with the E86 440 Magnum as a police package option yet that high output motor was not available in the 2 door versions, police or not, let alone any of the trucks. Yet the standard cam 440 could be had in almost any D/W series truck or B series van.
