Sometime in the past week, the van has stopped starting with a fast idle.

Before this, when I turned off the engine I would hear a whine like a small motor. When I next started the engine it would idle fast for a moment or two before shifting down to a lower rpm idle.

Because it's the summer, the van still starts but once it turns cold I'm sure it won't continue.

I don't have the terms for these parts so it's hard to even look them up in my Haynes book.

If anyone could give me a description of what's going on (or not, at this point) and some possible causes, that would be great. Thanks.

No check engine light.

Just doesn't go through the windup it used to do after the ignition was turned off and doesn't rev at high rpm for a few moments after the engine catches at startup.

I'll look into a pay pal account so I can buy the 1989 service manual on eBay.

thanks.

The automatic idle control motor seems to be running again. I've had the van in a shop for a week and when he started it up after the repairs he said it wound up as normal and it did it again for me on the drive home.

The morning I drove the van to the shop I had to boost it because the battery was so low. The mechanic said he had no problem with the battery when he started it up.

I wonder if there was something grounded out on the AIS motor and that was draining the battery. Time will tell I guess. I won't bother changing the unit until the problem returns.
