904 Torqueflite question

There is a what looks like a screwed in plug adjacent to and slight lower than the speedometer pinion. My question is, if I undo the plug, will I be able to drain fluid from what will be an open hole? I can't find ANY reference to what that plug is for. I am plulling the trans to replace the rear block freeze plugs and I don't want to drop the pan as the tranny was recently rebuilt. Trying not to make a mess as well,.... but I may have to pull the dip stick tube. Thanks.....mike

Thanks for the reply. I know what B is for. A is what I wasn't sure of. There in NO mention of this plug in any on the service manuals. I know there are other service ports in various locations and they're are pointed out in the manuals but no mention of this one. I was hoping it might be used as a drain.

Regardless of what you do, you aren’t going to drain much fluid without dropping the pan as that’s where the majority sits. I’ve pulled transmissions full of fluid and it can be done without much mess.

I would agree with valiant67 on this. Most of the transmission fluid is in the pan which resides at a lower level so you would not drain much fluid at bolt A.

Fabricate a cover seal from a used spaghetti sauce or mayonnaise container lid at your house. Attach to end of tailshaft bushing / seal and tape securely. That should prevent any fluid leakage when removing the transmission.

Thanks again for all the info. I don't have the same speedo cable attachment. I will have to pull speedo cable and gear. That's why I asked about that screwed in plug. Another issue will be wether or not I can drop the tranny without pulling the dip stick tube as well. If there's enough room to drop the tranny straight down that'll help as well. I have one of those older Direct Conn tranny plug packages and have the rear plugged. I'm not sure how much will come pouring out when I pull the speedo gear,... but that plug packafge does have a speedo plug. I was hoping I could drain enough out of that screwed in plug before I pulled the speedo assembly.

Like AllanC wrote its the tailend thats the problem, it needs to be plugged.
And the converter should follow the tranny out, loosen it from the flexplate and keep it seated against the tranny. ( a small spanner on the strut usually works to keep it from sliding out.)

When you remove the speedo gear, there may be up to a cup of fluid that will drain out. I would wait until everything is buttoned back up before doing it, plenty of room to take care of in the end. The trans dipstick is under one bolt between the engine and trans, should not have a problem as long as you don't hit it when pulling the trans.
