The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a finalist in the running for one of the North American Car of the Year awards — the first time Alfa Romeo has been among the final three, in the 24-year history of the NACOTY awards.

The Stelvio is competing with the Honda Odyssey and the Volvo XC60 for the 2017 SUV/Utility trophy in the Utility class.

The finalists were selected by secret ballots cast by nearly 60 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada.  The awards will be presented on January 15, 2018 at the North American International Auto Show , which has already begun setting up in Detroit.

Last year's winner in the new SUV/Utility category was the Volvo XC90; in 2015 the truck winner was the Ford F-150; in  it was the Chevrolet Silverado. Full details of the award and past winners, nominees and points awarded for each can be found here . Detroit-based automakers have won the car of the year 15 times over the past 23 years, foreign automakers eight times.
