The 2020 Geneva Motor Show was supposed to open to the media today, but the Swiss show was cancelled due to the concern over the spread of Coronavirus. Had the show run as planned, we would have been introduced to the new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm – both of which are lightweight, higher-powered versions of the impressive Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Fortunately, FCA provided us with all of the key details, along with images of the newest midsized super-sedan to hit the streets and the track.

Meet the Modern Giulia GTA and GTAm

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is inspired by the 1965 model that shared the same name. GTA stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita and Alleggerita is Italian for lightened, so as you can imagine, weight reduction was a key concern during the development of this package. The goal was to create a Giulia Quadrifoglio that offered increased levels of performance both on the street and on the track, so to emphasize the track aspect, the GTAm was created as well. The GTAm models are street legal, but their interior layout leaves no question that they are intended for track time.

The majority of the key features of the GTA and GTAm packages are on the exterior of the Giulia, starting up front with a unique front fascia that has been sculpted to offer improved aerodynamic properties, but it is also made out of carbon fiber to help reduce weight. The hood of the GTA models is also carbon fiber, as is the front spoiler, but the two models have different spoilers. The GTAm is intended to be more track-focused, so it has a front spoiler that extends outward and downward further than the GTA.

Out back, there is another difference, with the GTAm sporting the huge arch spoiler on the trunk lid (above) while the GTA has a more subtle spoiler tucked against the trunk (below). Both models come with a carbon fiber diffuser which encases the Akrapovic exhaust system, along with and racing-style center lock wheels and an array of other carbon fiber body bits. This includes the roof skin and the front and rear wheel arches.

On the inside of the GTA, you will find the same luxurious layout as the Quadrifoglio, but the GTAm is quite different. The rear seat is removed and replaced with a roll bar safety system.

The front seats are specific to the GTAm, featuring a unique carbon fiber shell that furthers the weight reduction effort, complete with 6-point Sabelt safety harnesses. Also, the GTAm sports Lexan side and rear window frames, along with excluding the inner door panels while the GTA has the same door panels and window systems as the Quadrifoglio.

Finally, the 2.9-liter twin turbo V6 has been retuned to increase the output from 510 to 540 horsepower. When combined with the 220-pound weight loss plan that results in a curb weight for the GTAm of just 3,350 pounds, this new Giulia has a power-to-weight ratio of just 6.2 lb/hp. That is the best weight ratio in the midsized performance sedan class, but more importantly, with the 8-speed and the advanced all-wheel-drive system, the GTAm will rip from a stop to 62 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds. That is quicker than a Hellcat Challenger.

Of course, like the Quadrifoglio, the GTA features high performance braking and suspensions systems, each designed to shine bright under the most extreme conditions.

The only bad news with the Alfa Romeo GTA and GTAm is that production will be limited to just 500 units total. The Italian automaker plans to sell most of them in Europe, the brand is “evaluating opportunities to introduce the GTA in other key markets around the world, including the US”. In other words, a few of this super-sedans might make it to North America, but they are going to be very limited at best. We don’t know how much they will cost, but it is safe to say that they will start at the top of the Quadrifoglio price range.
