I've 'spam cleaned' 3 new members today.
Edit: Add 2 more.

I think I got at least 20, maybe 30.
TechAdmin has been going after it multisite.
The post titles were very clever and often topical.
Some were replies.

Generally, downloading PDFs is a bad idea. If you must, create a virtual Linux environment using VMware, VirtualBox, etc, and open 'em there.

 

I probably got rid of 15-20 as well.

I did notice at one point it seemed to suddenly stop but then I realized others were helping!

One of the options is "Spam" which also publishes the person's info throughout VS, I believe.

 

I always flag them as spam, in once case it found 4 more users using the same (VPN) IP.

 

That feature has been very handy. Usually people don't use the same IP.
Gonna be hard to VPN into Allpar.

Sounds like you need upgraded anti-spam hardware.....

 

The use of a VPN is NOT enough to spam clean. Many use VPN's in very appropriate ways.

We have added some blocks, we are adding more blocks, and bringing more resources to bear. I am also monitoring and spam cleaning.

I didn't think IP blocking would do that much.
In ye olden times I'd blocked countries that have few or no Mopars in 'em but lots of spammers - China, North Korea, Palestinian Territories, a couple of others. We had two or three real Russian members, but I think at some point I blocked new members from Russia as well because it was 1:1000 members:spammers.
Not something one can do with a VerticalScope's scope.

 

I'm a member on another Fora run board and they recently had to push two-factor authentication because there were so many user accounts being hacked and then used to post fake classifieds listings.

 

As an aside, the blocks are NOT IP blocks. Way too easy to work around and always winds up causing more trouble than it is worth.

They were pretty consistent about their attachments. A lot of them were pretty well disguised.

I had spam-cleaned about a dozen or so, I had no idea this was just a part of what was going on. Sheesh, what a PITA.
