Ram is readying a facelift for its heavy-duty truck lineup, and KGP just caught a revamped 2014 Ram 3500 (?) Dualie prototype testing on public roads. A major overhaul is planned for the full-size Ram trucks in the 2017/2018 time-frame; the updated truck, though, seems to be an answer to the recently updated Ford Super Duty and the new GM heavy-duty pickups that are soon to arrive. The Ram 3500 and 2500 get a new grille, along with other front fascia tweaks. We expect that a lot of the interior changes and upgrades recently applied to the 1500 will be put into action on the heavy-duty models. One other noteworthy aspect that is clearly visible on this prototype is the massive front control arm seen underneath the bodywork. This change may signal an overall beefing-up of the chassis, to make it more rugged and durable, able to handle even..

Is that a 3500??

Looks more like a 4500 or 5500 to me to be honest. Look at the size of the side windows in relation to the height of the door skin. Even the HD3500's arent THAT big...

No reason they couldn't test sheet metal, grilles, and bumpers for as big as the 5500 on the same chassis as a 2500 or 3500...

This may sound strange, but I wish that at least the 3/4 and one ton models could be ordered with the same sheet metal as the 1500. I like the looks of the 1500 better.

2500 and above needed more grill opening and a higher hood line for the Cummins engine.

This is definitely not a 45/5500. Those trucks use wider-set, stronger, axles. You can distinguis them easily by looking for the protruding front fender flares, and by noting the 10-lug wheels, rather then the 8-lug types used on the 25/3500s.

This is a 3500 Mega Cab 4x4

The name transition from Dodge to Ram is starting to make sense if they are looking for a more industrial or commercial base. I still remember and miss the occasional Dodge single axle dump truck or local delivery truck with a trailer rig.

If you look closely at the photo of the front left quarter in the full post/original article it looks like the shock is outside of where the spring is. Could this indicate that they replaced the front spring with an air bag?

Sorry - here is the article with the picture I mentioned. http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2012/07/spied-2014-ram-3500-hd-megacab.html#more

Question for the experts - would there be any benefit to consolidating the 2500 & 3500 with the chassis cab architecture and making a pickup body to fit the chassis cab? Could this reduce costs?

That lower control arm is massive. Did you happen to notice the size of the top of the front spring. They are designing that thing for war looks like. Ram has got the best looking rear dually fenders just my humble opinion.
