AN: Wrangler quietly altered for modders (updated)

According to Allpar reader MoparNorm, Jeep has trimmed the pinch weld seam at the rear wheels of the Wrangler. This weld seam appeared in 2007, and is not an issue unless owners replace their stock tires with 35-37 inch tires, which are fairly common in the aftermarket. The unannounced change was seen by several Jeep dealers on 2013 Wranglers as they arrived. Norm wrote, “The pinch seam is on the red-painted metal; it used to be cut on a 90 degree (vertical), it’s now cut on a 45-degree angle, away from the tire.”

Thought I would give a quick update as I saw something weird yesterday regarding the pinch welds. I was at Medved Jeep in Castle Rock, CO. having my oil changed there for the first time. They had a 2013 Oscar Mike JKU on the floor that they had put a Mopar lift on and 35" tires. Nice looking. But as I checked it out, I notice the pinch weld was straight down just like it was is on my 2012 JKU. I checked it again and sure enough, it was a 2013. The funny thing is our other JKU - a 2013 Oscar Mike we purchased less than a month ago has the new angle pinch.

So, a quick check on the lot and the vast majority of the 2013's they have are straight. I pointed it out to their service manager and he had no idea they had changed it or that there was obviously a mix on their lot. Different build dates perhaps? Certainly a possibility, but several of them had just come off the truck.

Just a heads up if you were expecting this.

The build date of the switch over, is unknown. They just recently started arriving at dealers that way. Did both of the differing JK's have identical transmissions, 2 or 4 doors, or some other distinguishing difference to explain the difference?
Norm, the build date is what I figured was doing it, but again, a few of the straight pinch Jeeps had come in within the past 2 weeks. My wife's was purchased a month ago.

As for the types, here's what I remember seeing:

OM in Commando Green JKU: Auto - straight.
OM in Deep Red JKU: Auto - straight.
OM in White JK: Auto - straight.
Sport in Gecko JKU: Auto - angled.
Sport in Black JK: Manual - angled.
Rubicon in Black JKU: Manual - straight.
Sport in Dune JK: Auto - angled.
And a whole bunch more that were all straight, no matter the make, model, color, etc.- ALL 2013.

My wife's OM is in Billet, is a JKU and Auto and her's are angled.

Just thought that was interesting.
