Austin Wayne Self to make road course debut at NJMP

On July 28th Austin Wayne Self will be running the Barbera’s Autoland 150 presented by Driven Racing Oil at New Jersey Motorsports Park. After a strong second place finish at Winchester and winning the SCOTT Rookie challenge Austin and the Cunningham team will carry that momentum towards ‘Thunderbolt Raceway.’ Austin looks forward to bringing #22 AMTS Cunningham Racing Dodge to the front of the pack in his first ARCA road course race.

Thunderbolt Raceway at NJMP is 2.25 miles of asphalt, 14 challenging turns, a one half mile straightway and non-stop excitement. Despite this being his first run at NJMP Austin is boldly approaching this challenge, “I’m excited to see how we run at a road course, I have raced on road courses before in karting and I am very confident in my road course racing abilities.”

Looking ahead Austin has been focusing in on training and preparing himself for this road course race. Austin will also be making various appearances throughout race weekend at NJMP.

Cunningham Motorsports/ARCA Press Release & Race Preview

Note to Self - 'Must get road course ready'....

(MOORESVILLE, N.C. - July 25, 2013)

Seventeen-year-old Austin Wayne Self, coming off a career-best second place finish at Winchester Speedway, will be making his third ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards start this weekend in the Barbera's Autoland 150 presented by Driven Racing Oil at New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP).

Despite a rigorous racing schedule in 2013, the road course element will essentially be brand new for the Austin, Texas driver.

"I am really excited to get on a road course in a Cunningham car," said Self, who will be behind the wheel of the No. 22 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge.

"I did some go-karting (on road courses), but I'm thinking a stock car may be a bit different."

Although Self has no competitive stock car experience on road courses, he's done some recent testing on the road course at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina.

"We went to Kershaw last week and practiced the ARCA car. I actually caught on a little quicker than I expected to. I think I figured it out pretty fast. From all my karting days, something clicked. It was a good idea to get a feel of what a stock car likes on a road course."

Self is also on the grounds today at NJMP with his Cunningham Motorsports teammate for the weekend - Tom Hessert.

"I'm here with Tom Hessert, who really knows his way around here. We're just having a little fun in a rental Camaro - getting a feel for the track. Tom took me around and showed me the line. It's a very fast."

Self, who also finished sixth in his ARCA debut at Toledo Speedway in May, has been a busy teenager this season, running three NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races at Daytona International Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway and Richmond International Raceway with the Cunningham organization, in addition to six selected ARCA Racing Series events.

Self has three more ARCA races on his schedule after NJMP - Berlin Raceway (August 10), Iowa Speedway (September 7) and Salem Speedway (September 14).

He has also been racing almost weekly at his family-owned Central Texas Speedway in Kyle, Texas. After Self's ARCA season finale at Salem, he has three more K&N Pro Series races scheduled at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Dover International Speedway and Rockingham Speedway.

Practice for this year's Barbera's Autoland 150 presented by Driven Racing Oil is Saturday, July 27 from 11:20 a.m. - 12:50 p.m. with final practice afterwards from 1:40-2:40. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell follows final practice at 4:30. Sunday's race is scheduled to roll off at 1.

Defending champ Ranger fastest in practice sessions

(MILLVILLE, N.J. – July 27, 2013)

Andrew Ranger, the winner of two straight ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards races at New Jersey Motorsports Park, had the fastest car during today’s first practice session. Ranger turned only two laps during the 90-minute practice period, but was the only car to reach speeds of 100 mph, turning his lap in 100.531 mph.
Ranger, in the No. 53 Waste Management Bagster Dodge, won ARCA races at NJMP in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, he won with a last lap pass to get by Chase Elliott. Elliott had the second-fastest time in the first practice session for ARCA at 99.313 mph in the No. 9 Aaron’s-Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet. Elliott turned more laps than anyone else during the session -- 22.

New Jersey native Tom Hessert, in the No. 77 Barbera’s Autoland Dodge, led the times for most of the practice session and was third on the speed charts by the time the session ended. A pair of Venturini Motorsports drivers – Brian Wong and Nelson Canache – were also in the top five.

A total of 25 cars turned laps in the 1st practice session and the caution flag flew on a few occasions. Milka Duno, in the No. 35 Cantv-Milka Way Chevrolet, crashed and her Venturini Motorsports crew took out a backup car and began preparing it for Sunday's Barbera's Autoland 150 Presented by Driven Racing Oil.

Polesitter Andrew Ranger - NDS Motorsports & Dodge wins 3rd straight at NJMP

(MILLVILLE, N.J. – July 28, 2013)

Andrew Ranger passed Chase Elliott with 10 laps left in Sunday’s Barbera’s Autoland 150 presented by Driven Racing Oil, then sailed to his third ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards career win.
“When I was behind Chase I was trying to save my car,” Ranger said. “He pushed really hard with 25 to go, which surprised me. I tried to save the car. Then, when I was pretty close to him with 15 to go and then I passed him. I was a little nervous because I knew with that many laps to go a lot could happen.”

With no late race cautions, Ranger was able to widen his gap on Elliott, who was also passed by runner-up finisher Tom Hessert in the Cunningham Motorsports No. 77 Barbera’s Autoland Dodge.

“You never know what can happen with the last lap, 10 to go or five to go,” Ranger said. “I tried to be relaxed in the car and not make a mistake. Definitely I think we did a really good job – all the team did.”

Andrew Ranger & Dodge has now won three straight ARCA events at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

With his second place finish, Hessert came home with his career-best road course finish.

“It was definitely a good day,” Hessert said. “In the end, second place is awfully good. It’s always great to run well close to home. It’s great to have the support.”

Elliott, in the No. 9 Aaron’s-Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet, led the most laps (34) and was the SCOTT Rookie Challenge winner of the race. Toward the end of the race, he said, he had a tire concern that caused him to drop to third.

“We definitely needed to be a little bit better,” Elliott said.

Will Kimmel finished fourth in his No. 69 Messina Wildlife Ford and Frank Kimmel, in the No. 44 Ansell-Menards Toyota finished fifth. Justin Boston, in the No. 25 ZLOOP Computer & Electronics Recycling Toyota was sixth in the final running order with Venturini Motorsports teammate Brian Wong seventh, Mason Mingus eighth in the 811 Call Before You Dig Toyota, Steve Minghenelli in the Dylans RV Center Ford ninth and # 22 Austin Wayne Self - Cunningham Motorsports 10th in the AM Technical Solutions Dodge. Venezuela Tourism Toyota driver Nelson Canache was the last car on the lead lap, in 11th.

Ranger sat on the pole for the race but it was Elliott grabbing the lead in the first turn and staying there until Ranger passed him on lap eight. Will Kimmel led three laps in the middle of the race until Elliott passed him after the third and final caution of the race.

Ranger, Hessert and Elliott stayed out front for most of the day.

“We probably had the three best cars,” Elliott said. “It’s not the way it always works – that the best cars finish 1-2-3. I just wanted to come in here today and not do what I did at Road America and be a little bit smarter.”

The race took just one hour and 27 minutes, nearly 30 minutes faster than the first five ARCA Racing Series events at NJMP. There were only three cautions for 10 laps and the average speed of the winner was 81.753 mph, also an ARCA record.

Andrew Ranger, driving the No. 53 Waste Management Bagster Dodge, led 30 of 67 laps. The Roxton Pond, Quebec native, has now won three consecutive races on the Thunderbolt Course at NJMP.

“I feel so great, good for the team,” Ranger said. “We bought that car three years ago. We came here and won my first race in it. I think that car is built for here. It’s pretty cool.”
