So I have been in the process of getting the Valiant back on the road and the DMV of CA has been no help whatsoever!! After paying $107 for the Registration, they inform me that the Registration is on Hold until I have Re-instated my insurance. Which I have done, however I have to call Sacramento DMV Processing center to pay an additional $14 to re-instate my insurance.

So attempt to use their On-line system, no luck, tells me there is no outstanding insurance information for my car. Ok....so called, went through all the hoops...still no luck. Call again today and speak to a Tech, who tells me there is nothing he can done and that I have to mail the re-instatement fee to Processing center...good grief!! I asked if there was any way he could processes it, since my car was not in the automated system, there was nothing he could do! Also I can pay the fee at the field office! So time consuming!

Sometimes living CA is pain! Years ago, the fee was only $37 a year and now it is up to $93 per year! All my other cars have always gone down in registration fees as they get older, but not the Valiant! I guess it worth more now???

The one good news, I still have the original CA Black and Yellow plates and gets so many comments about those plates and asking how I was able to get them for the car. As I understand, you cannot get classic plates for older cars, you can order CA Legacy Plates, but they are only for Show and you must still have the newer plates on the car. Seems odd to me and I could be wrong.

Thanks for letting me vent!!

Yuck!

Here in Arizona reg fees are about $20 a year on cars/light trucks above ca. 15 years of age.

Too; we can get historic plates or use vintage Az ones assuming the alphanumerics are not in use and if the vehicle in question is the same age or older than the plate in question. It's 'weird' seeing ca. 1922 tags on a Model T, etc. in 2013 albeit with a current year/month sticker. :)
Same thing here, and it was determined the tags price could be raised to balance the budget! It's all political and driving all us folks crazy, others simply move. like almost one third of big business here, along with a good percentage of the rich (go figure), but it hasn't stopped those seeking assistance from coming here. Anyway, yeah, my tags for the Charger were $34, they have gone up past the $100 mark but it is in suspension right now. My Dakota was off the road for a year being rebuilt, got it back on, had to smog it (of course), and since it is an odd number truck and I smogged it on an even year (November, due originally in December), I had to then pay half the cost of the tags per year, then the next month the full amount, and then the odd next year came around and I had to test only (agan) smog the truck again. Yes, a ripoff.
The day gets better, just got the renewal notice for our TC....$309!!!! Geezzz
For whatever it's worth I live right where Arizona, California and Nevada meet; OK, maybe 10-15 miles where the crow flies to the exact geographical point but one gets my drift. :)

Needles; Ca: it's pretty much desolate yet this historic railroad town has so much potential with its vast percentage of pre WW II homes, (mostly empty it seems) central business district, Amtrak station, I 40 passes through there and the Colorado River is the eastern border. A single grocery store, NO new car dealers, one hospital, and that's about it.

Laughlin, Nv: it started up ca. 1966 when Don Laughlin opened up his first casino (the Riverside) and almost 50 years later, it's Las Vegas 'lite' with around 10 casinos, eateries, hotels but with none of LV's gang and slum problems.

Bullhead City/Ft Mohave/Mohave Valley, Az: again that area didn't start to get going till WW II with Davis Dam going in (old Bullhead) and farming (Mohave Valley) but fast forward to today and we have lots of stores including a Smart and Final and a Sams Club, two hospitals, car dealerships, mostly in BHC admittedly but still.

To back up what dana44 and Jaime are saying: it must be California politics regardless of party that are strangling Needles but things are flat blossoming a few hundred feet away (literally).

Finally got the tags in the mail today! So off to the body shop to get the body work done! It's getting close to coming home!
